Cargo Muchacho Mountains
| Name: | American Girl Kyanite Mine |
| Date: | 9/3/2006 |
| Location: | Cargo Muchacho Mountains |
Near the Colorado River, The town of Ogilby, a once thriving mining community is
host city to a vast mining area the Cargo Muchacho Mountains. The mining in this area, though still
heavily marked with mine claim markers has mostly been abandoned.
An old feeder used for mining of kyanite, long since abandoned, as more profitable kyanite mines were
discovered in other parts of the country. Kyanite was the principal mineral of interest here as it was
a commodity for the ceramics industry. One use of the ceramics was in the auto industry as insulative
material for sparkplugs. The kyanite is abundant here, and is easily recognized as its blue crystals
contrast with the surrounding white metamorphic rocks.
