Coyote Mountains

Eroded Sedimentary ridge
Name:Eroded Sedimentary ridge
Date:9/16/2006
Location:Shell Canyon

This picturesque image, from a geological perspective is a relatively young formation, approximately 7 to 5 million years ago. This age approximation is based on fossils found embedded in the substrate. Though deposition of the fossils could have occurred as a result of erosional transportation, this is unlikely since much of the bioclastic material is well cemented into sedimentation. The fossil pictured above is a partial test echinoderm (sea urchin) shell from the late Miocene to early Pliocene age. (Deméré, 2006)
