Upon entering the canyon, one gets an eerie feeling as though you are entering a lost world. In some sense that is exactly what you are doing. A lost world indeed, a world of oceanic creatures that once flourished in this labyrinth of 5 million year old rock are immortalized as their remains are preserved in this tomb of sandstone and clays: the fossil remains provide a legacy to their existence.
Evidence of flash flooding, and other natural erosional effects can be seen as previous flood waters have carved into the canyon walls. Millimeter by millimeter the canyon is being reduced by Mother Nature, and sometime in the far distant future this canyon will be no more.
