The basement conglomerate rock of this formation is from the Cretaceous
Cabrillo Formation some 72 million years ago. Above the conglomerate strata are rocks of the
Eocene epoch and above that are the rocks of the Pliocene epoch. An unconformity exists between
these two layers, and represents a loss of some 43 million years. One should ponder, what caused
such a large gap in time? (Abbott 1999)
